Monday Wash Day in Elmira

How it Describes “My Elmira”

Quilts are a big part of Elmira’s heritage and community. Many days you can drive through town and see our laundry hanging out to dry, which in many homes include colourful quilts. I think this reflects on us as a town that appreciates both hard work and beauty. As a child, I spent time playing under the quilt stands, while my Mom and Aunts stitched. I recently sat around a quilt stitching with a group of ladies, and marvelled how quilting was such a peaceful activity. This picture describes Elmira, with the wash-line of quilts on display, as beautiful things we enjoy and use every day. Elmira is a place where people value peace, hard work, and good old fresh air.

Artist Statement

As a kid, I painted a picture for my Grandma with ketchup and mustard on paper. My Grandma remarked “Well, that girl will never make money as an artist!” I have spent my life trying to prove her wrong. I love to draw and create, and spend as much time as I can learning and making new things. I enjoy creating art that makes people smile, and usually put a lot of personal details into the picture. I have been drawing and illustrating my entire life, and all I need to be happy is some paper and a pencil, and a big pot of coffee.

Artist Bio

I live with my family in an old house in Elmira. Although my education focused on English, I spent more time drawing than writing. I have been involved in many different creative projects over the years using writing and illustration. I love to put lots of details into my art, and have an Etsy shop where I sell illustrations for book characters. I work in coloured pencil, paint, watercolour and other mediums. I have enjoyed working on a number of community art installations over the past few years.
